What is IoT? — A Simple Explanation of the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things, or “IoT” for short, is about extending the power of the internet beyond computers and smartphones to a whole range of other things, processes, and environments. Here’s everything you need to know.
Until a few years ago, the Internet was only ours, of people … Now we share it with the “things”. Nowadays many everyday objects can be interconnected through the internet, for example, refrigerators that can buy in the supermarket, glasses with which we talk, bracelets that collect our health information and share it.
Here we are talking about very private data, so it is necessary to understand that while IoT is a very smart technology, we should also ask if it is a secure technology.
As I said, IoT or the Internet of Things is a technology that allows everyday objects with the help of a mini computer to connect to the network.
An example of an intelligent object is the smart thermostat, it can monitor the temperature through real-time data on the internet and regulate it in the place where it is located and thus help us optimize both the temperature and energy consumption.
The most common of the Smart Things is probably our smartphone that integrates assistance systems such as Google Assistant, Siri or Alexa. By the way, according to the latest reports from companies such as Google or Amazon, it is evident that one of the questions most asked of their assistant is: What time is it?
But don’t be fooled, the Internet of things can do much more than just tell us the time, for example, make air measurements with small sensors, create communications or data networks, or even control entire industrial plants.
